青光眼是一種損害視神經、影響視力、甚至可能造成失明的疾病。這種損傷可能是眼睛異常高壓，壓迫視神經所引起，因此「眼壓檢查」是青光眼診斷的重要依據之一。

食藥署進一步說明，眼壓是指眼睛內的流體壓力，通常是透過房水的生成和排出以維持壓力平衡。而測量眼壓的眼壓計，分為接觸式及非接觸式，而接觸式眼壓計又可分為壓平式眼壓計及壓陷式眼壓計，總共分為3種。

1.壓平式眼壓計：利用扁壓作用，以小扁平盤施壓於角膜，測出眼內張力。
2.壓陷式眼壓計：對眼球表面施以已知的壓力，從壓痕量得知眼內壓，壓痕深度與眼壓成反比。由於必須接觸，經常使用局部麻醉劑。
3.非接觸式眼壓計：透過噴射空氣壓平角膜，再透過儀器偵測角膜反射之光能量，進而算出眼內壓，設備和眼睛表面並無直接接觸。

食藥署提醒，若有角膜水腫、角膜潰瘍、眼睛感染（如結膜炎）或穿透性傷口等，須由醫師來評估選擇適當的檢測方式，如覺得視力模糊、眼睛有任何不適，請儘速就醫。
